being charged with third degree burglary and first degree criminal mischief. this is what he's accused of doing to the webster county courthouse and also to little joe's computer store. investigators say swick left his mark on both places by using fire extinguishers, covering the buildings in thick layer of of it. it's costing both businesses thousands of dollars to get it cleaned up. jack: local 5's claire powell has more in tonights big story, claire? claire: jack, between the webster county courthouse and little joe's computers... this vandal is costing them - not only valuable christmas business- but nearly one thousand up costs... . "it was quite a mess and deal to clean up" on december 8th , people working at the webster county courthouse walked into a mess. literally only 2 fire extinguishers did all that damage" police say in the middle of the night, the set off two fire left. his actions displaced all the county workers for nearly a week during clean up. supervisor merrill leffler says scrubbing remodeled courthouse- costs.

of 52,000 to clean the building" leffler says the bill will likely be near 75 thousand dollars toward the final estimate. then one week later, on december 15, only three blocks away.. "unfortunately to burglarize i business, we have to clean up our store" little joes computer was also vandalized, but this time, in surviellance video, you can see swick throwing a brick through the door, attempting to take joe gilberts bike. "he was very efficient but it wouldnt fit through the door" then you see the dust- from yet another fire extinguisher. swick was arrested by police in joe's attic. " theres no clean space in this store at all" today, he's left with a mess, a big bill and no christmas business. " the bid was 30k to clean the dust" as the cherry on top- joe says swick left graffiti in the soon to be, pay-as-you-can

door. he says this vandal not only cost him money... it cost him his holiday spirit. "makes a difference and christmas isnt the same" claire: little joe's computers is aiming to reopen by mid-to-late january. both the county and joe said vandalism is covered with their insurance companies. swick is now being held on two counts of first degree criminal mischief and two counts of burglary, one charge from the fort dodge police, the other from the webster county sheriff. reporting live, claire powell local 5 news we are iowa jack: a dangerous driving incident near drake university. around 12-20 today, police arrested a man who left a k-f-c before weaving down carpenter and forest avenues. police took away the man on a gurney after he crashed his car into a pole near the restaurant. they say he was actually giggling as they

police say the man hit at least eight cars while driving. several had to be towed away. amber knox, witness: "he sat there and then eventually he drove off, but then you saw that the whole side of his bumper and everything was off. so, it was pretty bad. it wasn't like a ding hit and then drive. it was pretty bad. " the name of the man isn't being released yet, as police are compiling several police reports on the incident. witnesses say several people chased the driver down the street after hitting their vehicles. no one was hurt. jack: now to a family still looking for answers into their son's death. the family of des moines teenager sam kemp wants to know how the 17 year old ended up dead in a pond between granger and grimes last week. whether it was his fault or someone else's. kemp was at a party in granger on the weekend of december 12th and ran off when police came. it took 16 local search agencies to find kemp's body in a pond

last thursday. an autopsy was done. but kemp's family is asking for another one and for more answers from police, with a protest over at the polk county sheriff's office tonight. jack: two des moines girls got a surprise this afternoon, just in time for christmas. jack: it's the last day of school before the holiday break for des moines students, and elementary students celebrated it with an assembly this afternoon. but for sisters lilly and olivia grubbs, it turned out to be more. take a look. "suprise nats i knew i was going to get them for christmas so it started off i was going to suprise them in their classroom then teacher found out then the principal found out then news found out so it went from being a suprise in the classroom to the whole school " sargeant cody grubbs says he

viriginia with his daughters to see relatives. grubbs is back home until january second. he's planning to take the girls out to dinner tonight. jack: spencer high school's wrestling team reflected today on the memory of a teammate who tragically passed away this weekend jack: austin roberts was a senior on spencer high school's wrestling team and passed away from natural causes during a wrestling tournament this past saturday. teammates of austin's took time to share their memories of him and to celebrate a young man who they call a brother. seniors on the team are sticking together to lift each other's spirits in honor of austin. coaches say it hasn't been easy for the boys emotionally, but they're depending on one another to help make it through. ""they're together in this and nobody else knows what they're going through other than each other. and it's created a little bit of a bond in our already tight family. they've seen the support that's come from the state, the country, the

messages and things like that," jack: teammates of austin say he was a kind soul, willing to help others and able to get along with just about anyone. jack: the search is on for a fort dodge man suspected of animal torture. gary wilson allegedly threw hot grease on his dog last month, causing second and third degree burns to the dog's face and head. the dog isn't living with wilson now, anyone with information on wilson should contact the webster county sheriff's office. jack: coming up on local 5 news at six... we take a look inside a classroom that's doing something special to reach kids with their cultural lessons. jack: and.... hillary clinton is in iowa just before christmas with a big campaign announcement that no other candidate is making.

unveil the plan tonight at a stop in fairfield. before the official announcement later tonight, clinton spoke in keota, where she commented on the news of her daughter chelsea expecting another child. "i'm going to be a grandparent again. it's like the best news for me. it's the best club i've been in. " jack: in her stops earlier today, clinton was accompanied by ag secretary tom vilsack and his wife christie. the vilsacks endorsed clinton for president in late summer. clinton's announcement on alzheimers research makes her the first presidential candidate to focus on that issue this campaign cycle. jack: bernie sanders spoke to several hundred people today in storm lake, caroll, and harlan, with an upcoming stop in council bluffs tonight. sanders' campaign sent out a release today saying they're already advertising in nevada. it's a signal that they think they'll be in the campaign long term.

meteorologist brad edwards. certified by weatherrate the independent weather experts" brad/wxc: welcome back. i'm local 5 chief meteorologist brad edwards. brad: let's take a look at we are iowa's most accurate forecast. brad/wxwall: the clouds pretty much won the battle today in central iowa as they will tonight. the good news is that it will stay relatively mild for december with temps staying in the upper 30s to lower 40s tonight. this means that we won't have to worry about any icing when the rain showers start developing later tonight. showers will start off light, but some heavier rains will be likely wednesday which will just add to the already record rainfall for this month. about a half inch is expected by the end of wednesday. temperatures should be in the 40s most of the day with some strong nw winds increasing over 20 mph in the afternoon. a smaller system will be rolling through thursday morning that will try to produce a few snow showers.

students. but social studies teacher chris covington is showing students at metro west learning academy a new element of cultural studies: through actual survivors and experts on certain topics. "try to teach critical thinking skills...diverse thinking and trying to just think outside the box. accepting people. i try to do a lot with diversity and that kind of thing...tolerance." jack: covington's class is featured in our one classroom at a time grant for 2015, provided by local 5 and banker's trust. jack/wxhang: i'm here with sports director jon schaeffer, and jon we're just a little more than a week away from the rose bowl jon/wxhang: that's right jack-- and the hawkeyes are excited to get out to cali. coming up on local 5 sports we'll hear from the team as they are wheels up in just a couple of days.

with jon schaeffer. we are iowa sports" jo welcome back-- in just a couple of days the iowa football team will fly out to california-- as they get ready to take on stanford in the rose bowl. it's been at 25 years since the hawkeyes were out at in pasadena for the granddaddy of them. as alex giaimo tells us-- there is a lot of excitement around the football team for this chance to win a 13th game this season. " well it's getting closer and closer till the hawkeyes take off for pasadena. while they are in california they'llbe plenty of rose bowl activities not only for the fans but for the players as well. they have a special trip to disneyland scheduled on their itinerary and while they are very excited for those festivities they know they have to find a balance between work and play. (kirk ferentz) one thing about a bowl game, espcecially this bowl, you're always going to play an outstanding opponent that's the case so we've got to get our preperation done and

football that's representative of the kind of football we've played this season. (cj beathard) we are going to enjoy the week and the attraction and that stuff but we are out there for one reason and that reason is to win a football game. (cole fiser) personally i've never been to disneyland so that will kind of be interesting to see but you know at the same time we arwe going there for one reason and that's to win the football game so. just as long as you keep that in mind. you can have fun on the side but just remember you have one main job while your down there. (george kittle) i haven't been to california in like 15 years so it will be really interesting. i'm really looking forward to our trip to disneyland so i think that will be really fun.
